Riu Palace Costa Mujeres, Mexico

I have been to Mexico three times but this was my first time venturing down to Costa Mujeres. I was itching for a hot, tropical destination after the long winter here in Ontario so when it finally came time to board the plane, I was ecstatic. I couldn’t wait to feel that burst of warm tropical air on my face when I stepped out of the airport. We landed in Cancun, grabbed a taxi and headed to the brand new Riu Palace Costa Mujeres. Riu has always been one of my favourite larger chain hotels. The level of service, quality of the food and the decor are always stunning but what really made me fall in love with Riu was their dedication to sustainability and their initiatives to help the communities in which the hotels are located and the environment. Before I became a travel agent, I didn’t even know what sustainable travel was! I wasn’t aware that I needed to look into who I was traveling with, where I was staying or what activities I was participating in. Over the years I have realized that ethical and sustainable travel are so important and I am so glad that Riu has made this a priority.

For most of the trip, we relaxed and explored the resort. We did book an excursion one day with Cancun Adventures and it was excellent. The tour guides were so friendly and knowledgable, the boat was beautiful and the food was the best food I have ever had on any excursion. Lunch came with a mixed fish and vegetable salad, pasta with chicken and spices, guacamole and tortilla chips, apples kiwi and strawberries and a piece of cake for dessert. Included in the excursion was snorkelling, paddle boarding and a trip to Isla Mujeres. The island was so laid back and welcoming. When you get off at the port, there are a bunch of shops, vendors and restaurants lining the street. You can rent a golf cart for 20USD and drive around the whole island as it is only about 3kms. If you have the chance, stop at Oscar’s Grill; we didn’t have enough time to stop and eat but the food smelled incredible and they had fresh stone cooked pizza! One thing I would change about my trip to Isla Mujeres is that I would have made it longer, I would recommend exploring the island for a whole day.

If you are traveling to Mexico and looking for a resort that is away from the buzz of Cancun, somewhere quiet and peaceful, I would recommend staying in Costa Mujeres. It is in it’s own little world, with stunning beaches and a beautiful marina. I would also recommend staying at the Riu Palace Costa Mujeres, even if just for the food alone! Everything I ate at that resort was excellent. My boyfriend is a chef and he was impressed with the quality of the food and level of presentation and service.

Mexico will always have a special place in my heart and if you are thinking of going, go!
